Partnership with Horbury Bridge

We had a wonderful time yesterday welcoming pupils from Horbury Bridge Academy, Wakefield in Yorkshire, to St Matthew’s.  Class 3 joined us for Key Stage 2 Mass and then spent time with their penpals in Year 6 talking about the similarities and differences between our two schools.

We look forward to strengthening our partnership and friendship in the future!

“Exciting, Excellent, Fascinating, Informative”….

…are some of the words that pupils have been using at St Matthew’s recently!IMGP2200

Last week, all pupils in the school took part in our annual Science and Engineering Week. A visiting scientist (kindly sponsored by the Chemical Industries Association) led sessions for each class.

Yesterday, children brought their shields to school to mark the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.  We will be publishing the children’s rights towards the end of the week and displaying the shields in the school hall.

Children in Year 5 and Year 6 were involved in a session with Childline yesterday to raise awareness of keeping themselves and other children safe.  One of the key phrases that came out of the session was “every child has a right to be safe and happy“.  We look forward to the next workshop on Friday.

Visit from Commonwealth Fellows

WebsiteWe have had an exciting week at St Matthew’s as we have welcomed two Commonwealth Fellows into our school.  Martin Odidi from Nigeria and Neelam Chughati from Pakistan both work in Church schools in their countries and are in the UK on a seven week trip with the Anglican Alliance.  Martin and Neelam spent time in each class, visited the church and met parents to find out more about life at St Matthew’s and about schools in London.  It has been a fascinating week for all involved and we are thankful for this wonderful opportunity to make links with friends across the world.

The new office is open!

We are delighted to announce that the building work to create a new office/reception area is complete! Although there is still some on-going work, the office is now open and ready for business.  We are thrilled with the outcome of this project which will have such a positive impact on our school.  Visitors will now be welcomed through the red doors from Old Pye Street where they will enter a glazed porch towards the school office.

Year 2 Gardeners

Year 2 have been learning about plants and animals during term 4. They planted several different seeds and were checking that they had the right conditions to grow healthily. The seeds sprouted and the plants were beginning to grow.  Miss Mainwaring-Burton decided that as the children have been incredibly diligent and responsible, it would be lovely for them to continue to watch and help them to grow at home during the Easter holidays! The children can bring the plants back to school after the holidays so that the whole class can look at changes.  If they are healthy and strong enough, they can be re-planted in the garden in the summer term.
