Our Year Groups

At St Matthew's we are committed to ensuring that our teaching and learning is firmly based on current research and practice. Our teaching, across all subjects, follows the Rosenshine Principles enabling our pupils to know more, remember more and do more. We fully appreciate the importance of:

  • Beginning the lesson with a review of previous learning.
  • Presenting new material in small steps.
  • Asking a large number of questions (and to all pupils).
  • Providing models and worked examples.
  • Practising using the new material.
  • Checking for understanding frequently and correcting errors.
  • Obtaining a high success rate.
  • Providing scaffolds for difficult tasks.
  • Independent practice.
  • Monthly and weekly reviews.

We want all St Matthew’s pupils - regardless of when they join the school - to develop a life-long love of learning across the curriculum and we want to ensure that love prepares them for the next part of their educational, spiritual and cultural journey and beyond. We want them to know that all the skills and knowledge they learn here can be used, shared and celebrated throughout their lives, making wonderful contributions to society.
